EULOGY

Born: October 28, 1945, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

After a few reincarnations 1050 CHUM quietly passed away on March 26, 2009

1050 CHUM was a legendary Top 40 powerhouse from the late 1950s through to the early 1980s.

The station had a formula no other station has been able to duplicate.

Through the formative ‘50s, the unforgettable ‘60s and the interesting ‘70s, 1050 CHUM played a major role in shaping the radio landscape in Toronto. Recording acts from Elvis Presley, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Guess Who, Elton John, The Eagles, The Doobie Brothers and Bob Seger not only graced the airwaves but walked the halls of 1050 CHUM.

The radio station was famous for the CHUM Chart. From 1957 to 1986, 1,512 consecutive weekly charts were published, making it the longest-running chart of its kind in the world.

Also, 1050 CHUM was noteworthy for hosting many famous rock concerts including, among others, visits to Maple Leaf Gardens by Elvis Presley (1957) and The Beatles (1964, '65, and '66).

1050 CHUM/CP 24 format flip from a Dutch perspective
Posted by Paul Jeffries on April 4, 2009, 12:59 am

I came across this news article from a Dutch website. Apparently CHUM's format flip was newsworthy over there too.
http://www.radiovisie.eu/int/nieuws.rvsp?art=00080066

I copied and pasted the text at Freetranslation.com and pasted it below to give you a rough idea as to what the article is about:
Canada: 1050 Chum from the ether Wednesday 1 April 2009
Lovers of oldies in the Canadian Toronto must on missing to a new alternative. Past Thursday, 26 March pulled CTVglobemedia after a lot of decades the plug from the 1050 CHUM. In place is dispatched now the audiosignaal of news station ‘CablePulse24' under the name CP24 Radio 1050.
The disappearing of 1050 CHUM is the consequence of large-scale savings with owner CTVglobemedia. The oldieszender scored yet namely but a market share of 1,2%, through which the the too little money yielded. Therefore became replace in first authority the live deejays largely through voicetracks.
Now one is gone yet a step further to replace through 1050 CHUM through CP Radio 1050, a station with paramount attention for the news. With this hopes can go CTVglobemedia the competition at with 680 News (CFTR) of Rogers, that a market share gets of 5.4%.

CHUM - GREAT PLAYLIST GREAT SOUND

Re: How 1050 CHUM could have sounded...

Posted by Scott Carpenter (boogie2) on April 16, 2009, 11:21 am, in reply to "How 1050 CHUM could have sounded

That station had a 6000 title playlist, all of which were in rotation... just not equally!! Do you seriously believe that ANY radio station would rotate a playlist that deep equally? That's the fastest route to suicide that I know. There HAS to be a "power rotation" of some sort, or you run the risk of becoming the "what the hell was THAT song?" station. Deep playlist, but not enough familiar music. That's the fastest route to the ratings toilet in history! Even W-CBS FM (which has drastically enlarged it's playlist) is only up to 1200 or so. Knowing Dan Mason as I do I doubt that he goes REAL deep into it real often. I remember listening to the last show I did on CHUM. In 45 years I seldom had the opportunity to listen to one of my shows intact, only through scoped airchecks. I remember commenting to Sandee "Man... Brad is REALLY putting some great music into that rotation." The fact is, CHUM played FAR more "Oh Wow!" songs than any other oldies station I ever heard. BTW, the average playlist for oldies stations in the US dropped to as low as 400 titles in some cases. The playlist was not the reason CHUM went away. Music belongs on FM, not AM.

CHUM signed on the air on October 28, 1945 as a daytime-only station operated by Jack Q'Part, a manufacturer of patent medicines. The station's first decade was marked by a weak signal from Don Mills, struggles to attract advertisers, and programming ranging from country music to horse racing. As far as consistent streams of revenue went, the station relied on ethnic programming (including large chunks of time bought by future CHIN radio operator Johnny Lombardi) and recorded sermons from Southern preachers. After a decade, Q'Part sold the station to Allan Waters, who had worked for CHUM in various capacities since its early days. While on vacation in Miami, Waters paid attention to WQAM, one of the first stations to run a rock-based Top Forty format. Waters found listening to WQAM an experience akin to "rocks smashing together. Very hard to listen to."
Though Waters may not have enjoyed what he heard in Miami, he felt the format might be the station's salvation. Staffers at CHUM were shocked by a tape Waters played of fast-talking DJs, perky jingles, and that crazy rockin' and rollin' music. After studying tapes from several American Top Forty stations that finished first in the ratings in their markets, Waters settled on six key points that made these stations successful:
1. Exciting news all day and night, with regular newscasts at five minutes to the hour;
2. Playing the top forty tunes all the time, plus some standards;
3. Concentrating on "personality" shows;
4. Using announcers with enthusiasm and zip in their voice;
5. A fast and exciting pace all the time;
6. Unlimited on-the-air promotion.
On May 26, 1957, The Telegram tipped off the public that changes were coming to CHUM:
Radio station CHUM, whose work, like man's has been ending with the dying sun is taking on a woman-sized job tomorrow night. That's right—CHUM's work will never be done. With stepped up power (from 3,000 to 3,500 watts) and with new transmitter moved from Don Mills to Algonquin Island, CHUM, "the friendly station," aims to make more friends and influence more people with clearer signal and continuous programs for Metro and immediate areas.
At all hours of the day, listeners could now enjoy "the top 50 on 1050." The station's first published chart showed Elvis Presley's "All Shook Up" at number one, followed by the morals-destroying music of Pat Boone and Andy Williams. Opening day DJs included Phil Ladd, Harvey Dobbs, Josh King (sound sample), Phil Stone, Peter Nordheimer, and Hank Noble.

John Mahjor in CAB Hall of Fame

JOHN MAJHOR INDUCTEE CAB-HALL OF FAME AWARD

John Majhor CAB-Hall of Fame Award
John Majhor certainly earned a place in Canadian broadcasting history as our country’s first “live” Video Jockey, but he also did so much more.

John, who passed away last year at the age of 53, got his start with 1050 CHUM in 1975. In 1978, he joined CHUM’s “9 O’clock Rock”, where he took over as the primary host the next year. John stayed with that show until 1984, while continuing his daily DJ shifts.

That year he made a smooth transition from radio to television when he became Canada’s first “live” veejay on the groundbreaking show “Toronto Rocks”. John’s knowledge of the latest hits, combined with his wit, charm and engaging personality, made the show an instant hit, and turned John into an even bigger star. In following years, John Majhor would climb new summits, becoming the host of CHUM’s coveted morning show, hosting CITY-TV’s “Lunch Television”, and working extensively in the US.

In addition to his talent as a radio and television broadcaster, John Majhor was an engineering visionary. He was the co-inventor of a US patent for internet-based independent programming of radio stations customized to the needs of their community. John was also one of the early proponents of internet radio.

John Majhor was a unique and natural talent who graced Toronto throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s. His passion for entertaining and engaging his radio and television audiences was palpable. Not only was he respected and appreciated by listeners, viewers and fellow broadcasters, John also had the respect of all those he met and interviewed, becoming lifelong friends with many of those whose paths he crossed.

John’s career provides us with an inspiring model. He was a consummate professional, an innovative programmer, and a person who was passionately committed to his community and his fellow citizens.

Dick Smyth brings back a lot of memories for me. Memories of getting ready for high school and hearing Dick "boom" the news on 1050 CHUM.

I especially enjoyed the years of "Tom, Dick and Henny." Tom Rivers was the jock, while my "hero" Brian Henderson did sports. Henny is one of the main reasons I decided to get into the business. What a superb writer.

Anyway, I heard Smyth last night and the subject was "is Christmas under attack"? This was on the heels of that clucked out judge bitch who yanked the Christmas tree out of the lobby of the court room on Jarvis Street.

DALE R. PATTERSON

(Note: Much of the information below is gleaned from Ron Hall's book, "The CHUM Chart Book." I've added and expanded on that information and put it into my own words.

On May 27, 1957, CHUM radio in Toronto made two changes that would prove very historic. They became the first station in Canada to program Top 40 hit music, 24 hours a day. Also, they began a tradition that would last 29 years with the weekly issuing of the CHUM Chart.

It was not unusual for Top 40 stations to issue their own weekly music charts in 1957. Several North American stations were issuing charts by that time; even more common were informal charts like Hound Dog Lorenz's weekly list for WKBW.

What made the CHUM Chart unusual was its longevity. From May 27, 1957 to June 14, 1986, 1,513 charts were issued without interruption (the last chart was prepared but never issued; there was one week in 1971 when two charts were issued.) This extended run made it the second-longest continually issued music chart by a private North American radio station in history (the record of 32 years - from 1960 to 1992 - is held by Hamilton's CKOC).

Few of the first CHUM charts survive. One reason for this is that on the early charts listeners were asked to fill out a form on the chart, tear it off and mail it in. So, many of the early charts were destroyed. Also many people simply never thought to save these early charts - who knew at the time it would last 29 years? ....

Rock Radio Scrapbook: Canada's Aircheck Archive

On May 27, 1957, CHUM radio in Toronto made two changes that would prove very historic. They became the first station in Canada to program Top 40 hit music, 24 hours a day. Also, they began a tradition that would last 29 years with the weekly issuing of the CHUM Chart.

It was not unusual for Top 40 stations to issue their own weekly music charts in 1957. Several North American stations were issuing charts by that time; even more common were informal charts like Hound Dog Lorenz's weekly list for WKBW........READ MORE @ Rock Radio Scrapbook: The CHUM Charts

ROGER ASHBY: ONE FINE MORNING (MAN)
by: BY DOUG THOMPSON

'I didn't get into radio to be famous. I didn't get into radio to be a star. And I certainly didn't get into radio to have my face plastered all over the city. I got into radio because I wanted to talk on the microphone to people.'

Talking on the microphone has taken Roger Ashby to the very top. CHUM-FM's Roger, Rick and Marilyn is Toronto's highest-rated morning show. But Ashby didn't always command such a large listenership. In fact, his first radio audience consisted of only two people - his mom and dad.

'My father built a mock radio station in the basement,' he remembers, 'pretty much like a real radio studio with turntables on one side and a tape machine on the other and a microphone in front of me.

From Adam Greenberg in Toronto comes this vintage 1985 CHR ‘check of “HitRadio” 1050 CHUM. The HitRadio monikker was used at a lot of U.S. stations in the 80s, and here’s Canada’s first Top 40 station also using it.

One of the great things about CHUM was the fact that they stayed with CHR for a long time after most American AM stations had moved on to other things. Part of it likely was the fact that Canada’s version of the FCC, the CTRC, really kept the AM band going… for one thing, the government licenses FORMATS to stations, something the free market-minded USA wouldn’t ever go for. Canadian listeners can elaborate further by commenting on this aircheck.

Early history and Top 40 format DJs

CHUM DJs of the 1960s were zany morning man Al Boliska, who quit in late 1963 to go 'across the street' to CKEY. He was replaced by WKBW Buffalo radio & TV personality Jay Nelson, popularly known as "Jungle Jay" from his role as host of a children's show on Buffalo's Channel 7 which was also popular among Toronto youngsters. He would be followed by housewives' jock John Spragge; singer/DJ Mike Darow; Pete Nordheimer, replaced in 1961 by witty Bob McAdorey; teen DJ Dave Johnson; and all night maven Bob Laine. Later additions to the CHUM DJ lineup included Duff Roman and Brian Skinner, both of whom came over from CKEY (then owned by Jack Kent Cooke).

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, CHUM DJ's included Duke Roberts (also known as Gary Duke for a time), Johnny Mitchell (better known today as Sonny Fox), J. Michael Wilson, Tom Rivers, Scott Carpenter, Jim Van Horne, John Rode, Don Reagan, John Majhor, Mike Cooper, Daryl B, Terry Steele and Roger Ashby. Among their later night-time hosts was J. D. Roberts, who joined CHUM in 1977, went on to co-host CTV's Canada AM in the early 1990s, and would eventually become known across North America as White House correspondent for CBS-TV and today hosts CNN's morning program American Morning.

1050 CHUM Celebrates 50 Years Of Rock

When this happened, the subway only ran along Yonge St. downtown, the 78 was still selling alongside 45 rpm records, and Ford was on the verge of introducing its biggest blunder ever, the Edsel. It was May 27, 1957 and Allan Waters was in a bind. His radio station with the terrific call letters CHUM wasn't doing so well. Times were tight, advertisers were few and bill collectors were calling with the kind of requests you couldn't put on the air.

It was on that date that Waters, the founder and owner of what would become broadcasting giant CHUM Ltd., decided to make his station the first to play nothing but rock and roll in Canada. It was a milestone act, and it came complete with people he knew calling him crazy and phoning him at all hours of the day and night pleading with him to 'take that noise off the air'. He refused and the rest, as they say is history.

And now that history is officially 50 years old. This weekend marked half a century since Waters took that bold step. Since then, many have followed in those footsteps. But few have met the success he pioneered with 1050 CHUM. The station has been celebrating itself all week, something it's taken far too long to do. ..

The 1970's

Some general notes about the countdowns in the 70's
Warren Cosford who once worked at CHUM was one of the people reponsible for the syndicated Top 100's that CHUM used for their year end chart between 1971-1976. We exchanged E-mails with me and he wrote that the radio programs were co-produced by himself Bob McMillan & Zeke Zdebiak and written by Bill McDonald. Other specials created by the group for the syndication market were "The Elvis Presley Story", "The Story of the Beatles" and "The Evolution of Rock" All the years between 1971 & 1976 were given away free of charge to Canadian Radio stations through the Canadian Association of Brodcasters. Many thanks to Warren for the information.

I REMEMBER CHUM
by: J. ROBERT WOOD

I arrived at CHUM on Valentine’s Day 1968. I was hired by Alan Waters and Larry Solway to assist Larry with his responsibilities as VP Programming so that he could devote more time to his telephone talk show, Speak Your Mind.

I had had a lot of exposure to some incredible top 40 radio stations before coming to CHUM, including CKY Winnipeg, CHED and CJCA in Edmonton. CHUM could not hold a candle to any of them at that time.

In fact, CHLO St. Thomas – where I served as a rookie program director prior to coming to Toronto – would have given CHUM a run for its money thanks to a terrific signal, beautifully sung PAMS jingles, production by Bob Greene and the late Chuck Riley, and outstanding on-air personnel including Arlene Dee, Hal Weaver, Paul Ski and Chuck McCoy....READ MORE @ RadioWest.ca • View topic - I remember CHUM

1050 CHUM HISTORICAL ARTICLE - DOUG THOMPSON

LINK: Doug Thompson is a legendary fixture at CHUM radio in Toronto

http://rockradioscrapbook.ca/

Radio heavyweight lightens his load with HHB Flashmic
By Peter Champman, HHB Communications Canada Ltd.

Doug Thompson is a legendary fixture at CHUM radio in Toronto, Canada. Having first stepped through their doors in 1965, he’s been recording reels for 42 years.
In that time, he has won 150 awards for creative excellence and worked with Ringo Starr, Phil Collins, Natalie Cole, Randy Bachman and John Candy -- for whom he was head writer and creative director for his weekly series “Radio Kandy.”

Mostly known for his long form radio productions such as an award winning, two-part radio retrospective on John Lennon, and more recently his involvement in the CHUM and National Broadcast Museum Foundation archives, he’s worked in pretty much every recording format short of magnetic wire.

Having started on a Nagra, moving to portable DAT machines and finally to the HHB DRM-85 Flashmic, Doug reflects on sore shoulders, airport security and sprained ankles. Who said rock & roll journalism was easy?

“Nagra tape recorders were heavy, heavy machines. I mean literally 25 pounds. And those were just bears to carry. I remember I was doing some interviews in LA and I had a short amount of time to do them. I’d somehow sprained my ankle and was on crutches. So I had this huge Nagra tape recorder on my crutches trying to get down the street in Beverly Hills. So the crutches would go, then the Nagra case would go, then the other way with the crutches… It took me half an hour to go a block. Believe me; I’m glad the Flashmic is around now, it would have been so much easier back then.”

Portable DAT machines, however, offered a little relief in terms of size and weight.

“When I was using a DAT machine you’d have to put it in a carrying case, and… it’s still heavy! It might only be five or 10 pounds but it’s sitting on your shoulder. With [the Flashmic] I can carry it in the little carrying case or in my hand or I could just shove it in my briefcase.”

When asked how the Flashmic’s small size and light weight changed the way he worked, he had this to say:

“I just came back from England and I used the Flashmic over there because I didn’t want to bring the DAT machine and the adapter and all that. The Flashmic was just absolutely perfect because I could go in the dressing room, I could go outside. You can plug in the earphones so you can hear what it sounds like if you’re in a hotel room and find the best spot to sit. I’m quite happy with it. It’s the most portable mic recorder ever! It’s great!

“I was surprised; when I took it [on the plane] security didn’t even ask to open it. With the DAT machine they always want to open the case and look at it. With the flashmic they obviously saw it was a microphone shape, but they didn’t even open it up.

For the Chum Radio Archives we’ve been interviewing a lot of the former disc jockeys and staff and we’ve been using the HHB Flashmic; taking it where ever, as there’s often not a lot of places to plug-in. In some of these older homes that people live in, the wiring causes buzzes and clicks, even when it’s grounded, so the Flashmic is phenomenal for that.”

The CHUM Radio Archives finds Doug on a five to six year project sorting through the mammoth collection of audio tapes that have been collected since CHUM’s inception in 1959, then transferring them to compact disc. What does Doug rely on with such an arduous task?

“I have an HHB Burn-it and I burn all my material on a Burn It with the HHB Thermal Blanks. It’s been a treasured piece of equipment for seven or eight years now!”

Check out the online Rock Radio Scrapbook (http://rockradioscrapbook.ca/) to hear some of the great tapes Doug has saved from the dusty vaults of Rock and Roll History. ...READ MORE @ Doug Thompson is a legendary fixture at CHUM radio in Toronto

1050 CHUM: A Final Appreciation

THE INFINITE DIAL - 1050 CHUM

1050 CHUM: A Final Appreciation

We did warn you a few weeks back that with Oldies having gotten easier to program on Canadian FM that your time to enjoy the eclectic Oldies format on 1050 CHUM-AM Toronto was probably limited. CHUM was on its second low-rated incarnation as an Oldies station. Canadian Oldies AMs have been phasing themselves out at a relatively regular clip in recent years. But its switch to all-news this week was still a shock to the system of many Canadian radio people. "What a disaster for radio! What an insult to our industry, to this city!" wrote one Canadian radio friend.

For the record, I'm really sorry to lose CHUM's Oldies format, too. In its second Oldies run under PD Brad Jones it had great depth and breadth. It was also one of the few Oldies AMs in Canada that gave you a sense of how many British hits had repeated their success in Canada without ever getting traction here. It was also one of the few stations that truly served as an example of "better living through voice-tracking" -- CKWW Detroit PD Charlie O'Brien pulled double-duty on CHUM and if you didn't know that, you wouldn't have figured it out from the on-air product.

Rock Radio Scrapbook - CHUM Archives

This site is the best when comes to CHUM archives.

Rock Radio Scrapbook - http://rockradioscrapbook.ca/chumbug.html

The CHUM Archives, Part 1 (The 1950s and '60s)

In October, 2003, legendary CHUM deejay Bob Laine retired after 45 years with CHUM Ltd. But he didn't have to go far for his next project. Laine - with the help of long-time producer Doug Thompson - soon began the lengthy but fascinating task of sifting through CHUM's enormous archives, dating back to the station's beginning as a Top 40 station in 1957. It has been a labour of love, and very fruitful.

What Laine and Thompson have found is a treasure trove of airchecks, jingles, photos and other material from CHUM's Top 40 era. And they have been very generous in donating these new finds here in The CHUM Archives on Rock Radio Scrapbook, Canada's Aircheck Archive. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE

CHUM HISTORY

"1050 CHUM" was a legendary Top 40 powerhouse during the late 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s.

Early history and Top 40 format

CHUM AM was launched as a dawn-to-dusk radio station on October 28, 1945 by Jack Q'Part, an entrepreneur in the business of patent medicines. The station, then operating from studios in the Mutual Street Arena, was taken over in December 1954 by Allan Waters, a salesman from Q'Parts' patent medicine business. Waters' first major move was to secure a license for 24-hour-a-day broadcasting for CHUM, along with a power increase to 5,000 watts. Less than three years after Waters acquired the station, and soon after bringing the new fulltime transmitter online, a major programming change was made. On May 27 1957, Waters switched to a "Top 50" format that had proven itself popular in some U.S. cities; Elvis Presley's "All Shook Up" was the first song played. "1050 CHUM" pioneered rock and roll radio in Toronto, and was noteworthy for hosting many noteworthy rock concerts including, among others, visits to Maple Leaf Gardens by Elvis Presley (1957) and The Beatles (1964, '65, and '66). While the station was rising to the top of the popularity ratings in Toronto in the early 1960s, it also built yet another new transmitter in Mississauga, Ontario (a few miles west of the current Toronto city line) along the Lake Ontario shoreline, and raised its power once again to its current 50,000 watts around the clock.

CHUM DJs of the 1960s were zany morning man Al Boliska, who quit in late 1963 to go 'across the street' to CKEY.He was replaced by WKBW, Buffalo radio & TV personality Jay Nelson, popularly known as "Jungle Jay" from his role as host of a children's show on Buffalo's Channel 7 which was also popular among Toronto youngsters. In the late 1960s, early 1970s, CHUM DJ's included Duke Roberts (also known as Gary Duke for a time), Johnny Mitchell (better known today as Sonny Fox), J. Michael Wilson, Tom Rivers, Scott Carpenter, Jim Van Horne, John Rode, Don Reagan, Terry Steele and Roger Ashby. Among their later mighttime hosts was John D. Roberts, who joined CHUM in 1977 and would eventually become known across North America as White House correspondent for CBS-TV and host of CNN's morning program "American Morning."

CHUM was also well known for its contests, like the 1970s' "I Listen to CHUM" promotion, in which DJs would dial phone numbers at random and award $1,000 to anyone who answered the phone with that phrase.

From gold-based to oldies

By the mid-1980s, CHUM had lost ground in the Toronto ratings to competitor Top 40 station CFTR and FM-based music stations. On June 6, 1986, CHUM dropped its Top 40 format for a heavily gold-based adult contemporary format ("Favourites of Yesterday and Today"). By 1989, CHUM adopted an oldies format, drawing heavily on its previous Top 40 reputation to cater to the fans of that era's music.
