1050 CHUM IS BACK
On May 7th 2001 at 3PM, 1050 CHUM AM after almost 44 years changed format to become an all sports station . The final song played was "All Shook Up" and then an audio history full of airchecks were featured for the last 14 minutes.
On August 27th 2002 at 3PM after airing the syndicated Jim Rome Show 1050 on the dial in Toronto played a audio history of the old 1050 CHUM and then 2 Elvis Presley songs, "A Little Less Conversation", and the first #1 on the original CHUM chart "All Shook up" You can hear the last of the old, and first of the new minutes of CHUM on Dale Paterson's Rock Radio Scrapbook website
Allen Farrell, 1050 CHUM's legendary Promotion Manager from 1957 to 1968, has published a book about the first 10 years of the "rock" CHUM era. Called "The CHUM Story", it's in all major the books stores in Toronto. It covers Allen's time as the promotions director at the "Nifty 1050" Die-hard CHUM fans might be disappointed at the content as many of the events have been covered in the 40th anniversary video and in April 2001's D.J. reunions. It certainly provides expanded stories of what it was like inside the "big house" and for this listener an enjoyable read.
The only thing that I felt was missing was a timeline. Sure we knew when CHUM started in 1957. The promo flop "Walking Man" contest event is mentioned as it was in the CHUM 40th anniversary video. (And thanks to site visitor "Sandra" I know it was in August '59. thanks to the back of the August 10 1959 chart)
The only clue we have about a timeline is late 1963 an important part in CHUM's history (read the book to find out what I mean). You can fill in the blanks when you follow the history on your collection of CHUM charts folks. Over all a fun read. ... More @ Craig Smith's Chum Chart Fan Site
