The CHUM Chart: A History

(Note: Much of the information below is gleaned from Ron Hall's book, "The CHUM Chart Book." I've added and expanded on that information and put it into my own words.

On May 27, 1957, CHUM radio in Toronto made two changes that would prove very historic. They became the first station in Canada to program Top 40 hit music, 24 hours a day. Also, they began a tradition that would last 29 years with the weekly issuing of the CHUM Chart.

It was not unusual for Top 40 stations to issue their own weekly music charts in 1957. Several North American stations were issuing charts by that time; even more common were informal charts like Hound Dog Lorenz's weekly list for WKBW.

What made the CHUM Chart unusual was its longevity. From May 27, 1957 to June 14, 1986, 1,513 charts were issued without interruption (the last chart was prepared but never issued; there was one week in 1971 when two charts were issued.) This extended run made it the second-longest continually issued music chart by a private North American radio station in history (the record of 32 years - from 1960 to 1992 - is held by Hamilton's CKOC).

Few of the first CHUM charts survive. One reason for this is that on the early charts listeners were asked to fill out a form on the chart, tear it off and mail it in. So, many of the early charts were destroyed. Also many people simply never thought to save these early charts - who knew at the time it would last 29 years? ....

In 1977, on the 20th anniversary of CHUM adopting a Top 40 format, CHUM founder Allan Waters was presented with this audio recording as a gift from his staff. And what a gift! It contains greetings from many of CHUM's early voices, in the following order and times:

'CHUM is celebrating its 50th anniversary this week by playing a lot of music from the 50s and 60s. Does anyone remember answering the phone by saying "I listen to CHUM?" ...'

'Chum and Al Boliska where a big part of my life in the fifties. Al Boliska was the MC at a prom I went to at Thornhill High School and that was a major event. WKBW and the "Sound of the Hound" was also another favorite DJ. I saw him al Loews Uptown Theatre in 1956 when he brought his rock....'

Early history and Top 40 format DJs

CHUM DJs of the 1960s were zany morning man Al Boliska, who quit in late 1963 to go 'across the street' to CKEY. He was replaced by WKBW Buffalo radio & TV personality Jay Nelson, popularly known as "Jungle Jay" from his role as host of a children's show on Buffalo's Channel 7 which was also popular among Toronto youngsters. He would be followed by housewives' jock John Spragge; singer/DJ Mike Darow; Pete Nordheimer, replaced in 1961 by witty Bob McAdorey; teen DJ Dave Johnson; and all night maven Bob Laine. Later additions to the CHUM DJ lineup included Duff Roman and Brian Skinner, both of whom came over from CKEY (then owned by Jack Kent Cooke).

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, CHUM DJ's included Duke Roberts (also known as Gary Duke for a time), Johnny Mitchell (better known today as Sonny Fox), J. Michael Wilson, Tom Rivers, Scott Carpenter, Jim Van Horne, John Rode, Don Reagan, John Majhor, Mike Cooper, Daryl B, Terry Steele and Roger Ashby. Among their later night-time hosts was J. D. Roberts, who joined CHUM in 1977, went on to co-host CTV's Canada AM in the early 1990s, and would eventually become known across North America as White House correspondent for CBS-TV and today hosts CNN's morning program American Morning.

The CHUM Radio building was originally a book bindary and book showroom. In the late 50's the building was renovated to house the studios of 1050 CHUM radio. It has gone through a number of renovations over the years and is home to 1050 CHUM, CHUM FM, CHUM Radio Network and CHUM Limited's former corporate offices.

Toronto's 1050 CHUM Final Open House


Say goodbye to CHUM on Yonge on Saturday, Nov. 15

After 50 years at 1331 Yonge St., 1050 CHUM is moving to a new location downtown in Toronto. Before the doors close for the last time, listeners and the curious have a final opportunity to walk the hallowed hallways, visit and photograph the historic studios and tour the CHUM Museum on Saturday, Nov. 15 from noon to 3 PM.

Want to hang out in the legendary CHUM studio or hang with CHUM greats past and present as they take their turn behind the mic? You betcha! To make the invitation unbeatable, management guarantees that one can shake hands with Gord James, Bob Laine, Roger Ashby and Robbie Lane.

Roger Abbott and Don Ferguson of the Royal Canadian Air Farce (who are celebrating their final season on television) will be there too, fulfilling their dream of one day doing their own show on CHUM.

Amber(Payie) has spent 13 amazing years at the greatest radio station in North America!! She began her career at CHUM in February 1994 when plucked out of Humber College to stand at a 1050 CHUM booth at the Auto Show… for 10 days… 12 hours each day. Amber must have done something right because from there, she moved around in the CHUM building absorbing many aspects of the radio industry. After the Auto Show, Amber was hired to represent 1050 CHUM at all promotional events and was given the nickname “On-Location Amber” by then morning man, Robbie Evans. Paid only $50.00/week she cherished the opportunity. Amber has been a part of almost every department at CHUM from Promotions for both 1050 CHUM and sister station 104.5 CHUM FM, to working along side the talented Bob Laine in the CHUM Radio Network. For 4 years Amber coordinated the CHUMCity Christmas Wish program from 1995 – 1998. It’s a program that continues to be near and dear to Amber’s heart. Currently, Amber is the afternoon traffic reporter on 1050 CHUM, 104.5 CHUM FM and CP24. Amber can be heard every morning with Gord James and the James Gang as 1050 CHUM’s Entertainment Reporter, and she has her own time slots on 1050 CHUM from 10am – Noon weekdays… and host of Sweet Dreams – the greatest love songs of Rock and Roll heard every night from 10:50pm until Midnight. DJ Wayne -

Wayne has been a part of the CHUM family for nearly 20 years and is Southern Ontario's Number 1 Rock ‘n Roll Oldies Club DJ's. Spinning the hits of the 50’s & 60’s, Motown, Disco, 70’s Rock and the hits of today, he has worked in several clubs and venues including the Island Club at Ontario Place, Blue Suede Sue's and was a DJ at Toronto’s famous “Misty’s” nightclub at the Toronto Airport Hilton throughout the 80’s and 90’s.

Wayne spent several years as an On-Air Producer at 1050 CHUM and CHUM FM working with personalities such as Marc Chambers, Roger Ashby, Tom Rivers, Gord James and Amber Payie and is the official DJ for the 1050 CHUM Oldies Dance.

Wayne is famous for his huge collection of music which spans the decades from 50’s Be-Bop and 60’s Rock to 70’s Disco and the hottest hits of today. He has supplied music services for special events all over Ontario for over 20 years.

You can catch DJ Wayne every Saturday night 'LIVE' at Hollywood on the Queensway in Etobicoke, Ontario for the Hollywood Oldies Dance.
