TORONTO, Nov. 17 /CNW/ - With more than 40 years of success in broadcasting, CHUM-FM radio personality Roger Ashby will be inducted to the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame. Ashby will be recognized for his achievements at the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Awards on Thursday, March 11, 2010, during Canadian Music Week, March 10-14, 2010, in Toronto.
Celebrating 40 years with CHUM radio this year, Roger Ashby is one of the best-known broadcasters in Toronto. Although his career officially started at a radio station in Hamilton, it wasn't until 1969 when Ashby started at CHUM that he was officially living his dream. What he didn't know at the time was that it would also be the start of a remarkable career in radio.
For 16 years he cranked out the hits on 1050 CHUM, a legendary Top 40 powerhouse during the late 50s, 60s, 70s and early 80s. He then moved across the hall to take the reigns as morning man on CHUM FM, where he continues to broadcast today. .....

'I didn't get into radio to be famous. I didn't get into radio to be a star. And I certainly didn't get into radio to have my face plastered all over the city. I got into radio because I wanted to talk on the microphone to people.'

Talking on the microphone has taken Roger Ashby to the very top. CHUM-FM's Roger, Rick and Marilyn is Toronto's highest-rated morning show. But Ashby didn't always command such a large listenership. In fact, his first radio audience consisted of only two people - his mom and dad.

'My father built a mock radio station in the basement,' he remembers, 'pretty much like a real radio studio with turntables on one side and a tape machine on the other and a microphone in front of me.

From Adam Greenberg in Toronto comes this vintage 1985 CHR ‘check of “HitRadio” 1050 CHUM. The HitRadio monikker was used at a lot of U.S. stations in the 80s, and here’s Canada’s first Top 40 station also using it.

One of the great things about CHUM was the fact that they stayed with CHR for a long time after most American AM stations had moved on to other things. Part of it likely was the fact that Canada’s version of the FCC, the CTRC, really kept the AM band going… for one thing, the government licenses FORMATS to stations, something the free market-minded USA wouldn’t ever go for. Canadian listeners can elaborate further by commenting on this aircheck.

The CHUM Radio building was originally a book bindary and book showroom. In the late 50's the building was renovated to house the studios of 1050 CHUM radio. It has gone through a number of renovations over the years and is home to 1050 CHUM, CHUM FM, CHUM Radio Network and CHUM Limited's former corporate offices.

Say goodbye to CHUM on Yonge on Saturday, Nov. 15

After 50 years at 1331 Yonge St., 1050 CHUM is moving to a new location downtown in Toronto. Before the doors close for the last time, listeners and the curious have a final opportunity to walk the hallowed hallways, visit and photograph the historic studios and tour the CHUM Museum on Saturday, Nov. 15 from noon to 3 PM.

Want to hang out in the legendary CHUM studio or hang with CHUM greats past and present as they take their turn behind the mic? You betcha! To make the invitation unbeatable, management guarantees that one can shake hands with Gord James, Bob Laine, Roger Ashby and Robbie Lane.

Roger Abbott and Don Ferguson of the Royal Canadian Air Farce (who are celebrating their final season on television) will be there too, fulfilling their dream of one day doing their own show on CHUM.

Visitors are encouraged to bring a donation for the CP24 CHUM Christmas Wish, now in its 42nd year helping Toronto’s needy at Christmastime. In appreciation, each donor will receive a special souvenir gift from 1050 CHUM.
