EULOGY

Born: October 28, 1945, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

After a few reincarnations 1050 CHUM quietly passed away on March 26, 2009

1050 CHUM was a legendary Top 40 powerhouse from the late 1950s through to the early 1980s.

The station had a formula no other station has been able to duplicate.

Through the formative ‘50s, the unforgettable ‘60s and the interesting ‘70s, 1050 CHUM played a major role in shaping the radio landscape in Toronto. Recording acts from Elvis Presley, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Guess Who, Elton John, The Eagles, The Doobie Brothers and Bob Seger not only graced the airwaves but walked the halls of 1050 CHUM.

The radio station was famous for the CHUM Chart. From 1957 to 1986, 1,512 consecutive weekly charts were published, making it the longest-running chart of its kind in the world.

Also, 1050 CHUM was noteworthy for hosting many famous rock concerts including, among others, visits to Maple Leaf Gardens by Elvis Presley (1957) and The Beatles (1964, '65, and '66).

Radio legend Roger Ashby to be inducted to the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame

TORONTO, Nov. 17 /CNW/ - With more than 40 years of success in broadcasting, CHUM-FM radio personality Roger Ashby will be inducted to the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame. Ashby will be recognized for his achievements at the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Awards on Thursday, March 11, 2010, during Canadian Music Week, March 10-14, 2010, in Toronto.
Celebrating 40 years with CHUM radio this year, Roger Ashby is one of the best-known broadcasters in Toronto. Although his career officially started at a radio station in Hamilton, it wasn't until 1969 when Ashby started at CHUM that he was officially living his dream. What he didn't know at the time was that it would also be the start of a remarkable career in radio.
For 16 years he cranked out the hits on 1050 CHUM, a legendary Top 40 powerhouse during the late 50s, 60s, 70s and early 80s. He then moved across the hall to take the reigns as morning man on CHUM FM, where he continues to broadcast today. .....

1050 CHUM Turns 50

Canada's First Top 40 Radio Station Now Part of Major Media Empire

 bigger text smaller text
By: Lee Rickwood

Anniversaries commemorate happenings of major historical significance or a more personally relevant nature. The 50th anniversary of 1050 CHUM rock radio is both. For fans of radio and pop music, 1050 CHUM generates some serious sentimental currency in our memory banks. And it generated some serious currency for the corporation ever since. Today, 1050 CHUM is now part of CTVglobemedia, following approval and finalization of its CHUM Ltd. acquisition, concluded barely one month after the AM station's 50th birthday. CHUM Limited assets at the time of acquisition included 34 radio stations, the A-Channel Network of 6 local stations, CKX Brandon, and 19 specialty stations including MuchMusic, Bravo!, Space, CP24 and CLT. But the number that really matters is 1050. As most folks recall it, the first of Canada's rock radio dynasties was born in humble and happenstance fashion. Founder Allan Waters was working for a man known as Jack Sharp, who owned of a number of enterprises, most notably a profitable patent-medicine business. Eventually, he had to sell off some of his holdings. Waters set his sights set on the medicine business, but he ended up with a money-losing radio station called CHUM. In December 1954, Waters took ownership. Only 250 watts and only broadcasting dawn until dusk. CHUM floundered until Waters heard a top 40 radio station while on vacation in Miami in the winter of 1956/57. The music wasn't to his taste, but he saw and heard a major opportunity. Despite internal protests, CHUM 1050 dropped Rosemary Clooney and her ilk, and started rocking around the clock on May 27, 1957. People who knew Waters (and people who had never heard of him) began to call him crazy, phoning him at all hours of the day and night pleading - demanding - that he 'take that noise off the air'. But Waters stuck with it, and he told the story many times how he would only allow 40 records into the station! The key to success, he felt, was repetition of those same records over and over. If anyone brought in another record, he would throw it - and/or the offender - out. The rest is history, as they say, and its captured in weekly CHUM charts. For many years, (weekly charts were produced from 1957 to 1986), those charts were the measure of success for musicians in Canada and the barometer of teen tastes and activities. Record retailers such as Sam the Record Man prominently displayed the week's chart and racked the 45 RPM singles according to its rankings. Every week, teens would flock to Sam's to check the charts. The job of every record promotion person was to secure a hallowed position therein. The job of every teen was to be cool, of course, so they had to have the latest 45s at home, and they had to have the car radio tuned to CHUM. "My memories of CHUM are of the 'back-seat' variety," teases a fan named Karen. "If you wanted to get a date, having a car was one thing, but it had to have radio. In those days, the dating scene and the music scene were directly connected. That's what I remember." In the early 60s, 1050 CHUM was credited with airing the Beatles a full year in advance of U.S. stations, thereby vaulting to the top of the Toronto radio pile. 1050 CHUM was a big part of the frenzy and fan-aticism that greeted the Toronto concert appearances by the Fab Four; DJ Duff Roman still calls the thrill of seeing the Beatles, and hearing the fans scream, as one of his most memorable. ...
As another fan recalls, listeners took notice and made contact, too. "I remember wanting to know the name of a certain song they had played, and I called in," describes long-time listener, Barb. "Well, we dialed the number, and it was the DJ himself who answered! I couldn't believe it. They were on air, but they were so accessible, so friendly, you thought they were playing records just for you." By 1974, Roman was made program director to take the station to a new level. The station morphed from Progressive to Album Oriented Rock, a somewhat more structured sound with a professional playlist. By 1977 the new sound was so successful that it had become the #1 FM station in Canada in terms of weekly circulation. By 1984 the next step in the evolution began. As the baby boom aged, CHUM-FM made the move to Adult Rock, launching the new sound with a TV ad takeoff on "The Big Chill."
................................................

Fifty years on, the familiar neon sign still lights the street, and it still proclaims "Radio One 1050 CHUM". It towers over the city, it towers over all the memories from those days. It reminds us of era when radio ruled, and music was magic.
Happy Birthday CHUM! We're anticipating 50 more, 'cuz ya know, "Rock and roll will never die!"

Early chum history

CHUM signed on the air on October 28, 1945 as a daytime-only station operated by Jack Q'Part, a manufacturer of patent medicines. The station's first decade was marked by a weak signal from Don Mills, struggles to attract advertisers, and programming ranging from country music to horse racing. As far as consistent streams of revenue went, the station relied on ethnic programming (including large chunks of time bought by future CHIN radio operator Johnny Lombardi) and recorded sermons from Southern preachers. After a decade, Q'Part sold the station to Allan Waters, who had worked for CHUM in various capacities since its early days. While on vacation in Miami, Waters paid attention to WQAM, one of the first stations to run a rock-based Top Forty format. Waters found listening to WQAM an experience akin to "rocks smashing together. Very hard to listen to."
Though Waters may not have enjoyed what he heard in Miami, he felt the format might be the station's salvation. Staffers at CHUM were shocked by a tape Waters played of fast-talking DJs, perky jingles, and that crazy rockin' and rollin' music. After studying tapes from several American Top Forty stations that finished first in the ratings in their markets, Waters settled on six key points that made these stations successful:
1. Exciting news all day and night, with regular newscasts at five minutes to the hour;
2. Playing the top forty tunes all the time, plus some standards;
3. Concentrating on "personality" shows;
4. Using announcers with enthusiasm and zip in their voice;
5. A fast and exciting pace all the time;
6. Unlimited on-the-air promotion.
On May 26, 1957, The Telegram tipped off the public that changes were coming to CHUM:
Radio station CHUM, whose work, like man's has been ending with the dying sun is taking on a woman-sized job tomorrow night. That's right—CHUM's work will never be done. With stepped up power (from 3,000 to 3,500 watts) and with new transmitter moved from Don Mills to Algonquin Island, CHUM, "the friendly station," aims to make more friends and influence more people with clearer signal and continuous programs for Metro and immediate areas.
At all hours of the day, listeners could now enjoy "the top 50 on 1050." The station's first published chart showed Elvis Presley's "All Shook Up" at number one, followed by the morals-destroying music of Pat Boone and Andy Williams.

Opening day DJs included Phil Ladd, Harvey Dobbs, Josh King

1944
York Broadcasters Ltd. was incorporated October 2. The company was then issued a licence by the Department of Transport to operate a new 1,000 watt radio station in Toronto, to be designated as CHUM. Around the same time, the company announced that R.T. Fulford was elected president and Al Leary, managing director of the new station. Fulford was president of C.E. Fulford Ltd. Leary had been manager of CKCL Toronto for 14 years.
1945
CHUM's construction was delayed by a freeze on the building of new stations and the purchase of new equipment by the Department of Munitians & Supply, because of the shortage of certain materials needed for the prosecution of war. Before the freeze, CHUM's new transmitter was packed and all ready to ship by Western Electric.
Managing director Al Leary announced in September that the new 1,000 watt CHUM would begin broadcasting in late October or the first week of November. CHUM would be the only Toronto area station operating on 60 cycles and would use the 1050 kHz frequency. The station would be operated by York Broadcasters Ltd., operated by Toronto businessmen R.T. Fulford (president), J.H.Q. Part, Al Leary and E.A. Byworth. Staff at this point would include Sgt. Dick MacDougall, formerly of CKCL and CFRB, and Dunc Chisholm, D.F.M., formerly with the R.C.A.F., and often heard on Air Force radio. Leary said it would be station policy to engage as many servicemen as possible. Plans were being made to establish a news department with an experienced reporter to cover important local happenings. Mayor Saunders would broadcast a half-hour talk on community affairs each Sunday. Jack Part was in the patent medicine business. He wanted a radio licence so he could promote the sale of his products.
Dick Dickinson joined the announce staff of CHUM from the Department of Transport (Radio Branch). He broke into the business at CHNC (New Carlisle, QC) and was then transferred from the technical staff to CKNB (Campbellton, NB) as chief announcer and studio engineer (before moving to CHUM).
CHUM Radio began broadcasting on October 28. Howard B. Chase of the CBC Board of Governors (to retire on November 15) spoke to the audience in the opening broadcast. He said, "The great duty of the privately owned stations is to provide service to their own special community, and it was for this reason that station CHUM was licensed". Mayor Robert Saunders also addressed the audience on opening day as well.
The daytime only station operated on a frequency of 1050 kHz with a power of 1,000 watts. Studios and offices were on the top floor of the Hermant Building at 21 Dundas Square. The transmitter site was on Lot 5, Concession 3, east of Yonge Street (south-east corner of Don Mills Road and Lawrence Avenue East), North York Township, York County. One 233 foot tower was used. CHUM - "The Friendly Station" - was owned and operated by York Broadcasters Ltd. CHUM was Toronto's fifth radio station and the first new station for the city, of the post-war era.
Programming in the early days consisted of a popular weekly report from the city's mayor, two daily live musical programs; a breakfast routine with such personalities as Monty Hall and Larry Mann, and a noon-hour country and western show known as the Danforth Radio Show. Dick MacDougal was CHUM's first announcer and program director.
Announcer Wally Hopper left CHUM.
1945-46
CHUM established its own merchandising division. The department put out a monthly publication with separate editions for the grocery and drug trades, and was experimenting with a listener sheet to be distributed free to every home in the city. "CHUM, The Retailer's Friend", consisted largely of merchandising information about products in these two fields, advertised over the station.
Neil LaRoy and Nancy Graham were added to CHUM's special features staff. Alf Stanton was now handling CHUM's music department. He had been with CKEY.
1946
In the spring, a fire in the Hermant Building’s basement forced CHUM off the air for a time. Phone service was lost and the program feed from the studios to the transmitter site was cut. Station staff jumped into action and set up a temporary studio at the transmitter building. Programming resumed the following day from the temporary studio location.
R. T. Fulford announced his retirement as president of York Broadcasters Ltd. John H. Part, secretary-treasurer, was elected president having withdrawn from Mason’s United Advertisers Agency Ltd. Fulford would take up the post of vice-president of York Broadcasters. Part would remain president of Mason Remedies Ltd. and International Associated Products Ltd.
Later in the year, Rolly Ford was appointed manager of CHUM. He had been commercial manager and would continue in that role as well.
CHUM was erecting a new building on Mutual Street near Carlton. It was hoped the station would move in to the new facility, early in 1947.
Johnny Lombardi began his broadcasting career at CHUM. The future owner of CHIN Radio hosted a Sunday afternoon program.
There was a fire in the Hermant Building, home of CHUM. The fire cut off all phone communications and completely severed the lines between the studios and East York transmitter site. The following day, staff were able to set up an emergency studio and broadcast directly from the transmitter site. When the BUP newswire failed, threatening the station's scheduled hourly newscasts, news editor Fred Wilson went to BUP's office and phoned flashes to the transmitter site as they came over the wires. The information was taken down by shorthand and transcribed for the announcers.
Bob Martin was an announcer. Roland Koster was an operator. Fred Wilson was news editor.
The CHUM sales department was reorganized. Gerry Purcell and Bill Slade were placed in charge of all business for national accounts. Both were recent army discharges. Traffic officer Vern Page hosted a Sunday afternoon safety broadcast on CHUM.
R.T. Fulford announced his retirement as president of York Broadcasters Ltd. John H. Part, secretary-treasurer was elected president, having withdrawn from Mason's United Advertisers Agency Ltd. Fulford would take up the post of vice-president of York Broadcasters while Part remained as president of Mason Remedies Ltd. and International Associated Products Ltd.
Al Leary, former part owner and managing director of CHUM, opened a new office in San Francisco where he would represent Canadian radio stations and publications in California, Oregon and Washington.
CHUM was erecting a new office and studio complex on Mutual Street, near Carlton. It was expected to be ready for use in 1947.
Passengers on all flights of American Airlines at Toronto were provided with last minute sports scores courtesy of the CHUM newsroom.
Commercial manager Rolly Ford was appointed manager of CHUM. He entered radio in 1930 at CJCJ Calgary. He also worked at the Vancouver Sun, CJOR Vancouver and the National Film Board and served with the RCAF. Ford joined the CHUM sales staff earlier this year and was then appointed commercial manager. As manager, he would continue on in the commercial manager role. Harry sayers, formerly with "Marketing", was appointed public relations director for CHUM.
1947
CHUM's new building was expected to be open for business around March 17. Centrally located on Mutual Street at Granby, one block from Maple Leaf Gardens, the new facility contained a spacious auditorium. The main enterence led right into the auditorium. The studios were in the main part of the building and offices were in the wings on either side.
CHUM was offering listeners up to $5.00 for the best news story sent in for "Tele-Flash News".
Bill Lennox joined the CHUM announce staff. Vern Hill joined the CHUM announce staff from CHML in Hamilton. Joan Orr joined the CHUM sales department from CKLN Nelson where she was manager.
In early May, CHUM manager Rolly Ford, announced the station hoped to move into its new building later in the month. The building was one-story, had a frontage of 102 feet and a depth of 89 feet. It had a basement and provision for a second floor.
The CHUM studios and offices moved to the Fulpart Building, 225 Mutual Street at Granby in Toronto. The name Fulpart represented R. T. Fulford and John (Jack) H. Part. The impressive new one-storey building incorporated many of the latest developments in studio design. The location was later sold to RCA Studios and the failing radio station settled for less imposing quarters at 250 Adelaide Street West.
Dick MacDougal left for the CBC. Bill Pring (operator) left CHUM for CKNX in Wingham. Dennis Olorenshaw joined CHUM as publicity director.
CHUM had an FM mobile unit.
1948
The CBC Board recommended for approval, CHUM's application for an FM station (100.7 MHz, 3,200 watts, 204 feet above average terrain).
The CBC also recommended for approval, the transfer of 799 shares in York Broadcasters Ltd.
Ron McAllister hosted "Matter of Opinion".
The CBC Board approved a change of operating hours for the FM station. This would enable CHUM-FM to have a full broadcasting schedule which had to date been restricted by the day only hours of CHUM-AM.
1948-49
CHUM introduced a profit-sharing plan for its employees. The plan would give employees from five to 25% of their annual payroll earnings with the actual percentage being determined by the station's total sales volume rather than on net profits.
1949
Ted Root was the new commentator on Spotlight Sports Parade. Some on-air names and programs: Michael Hopkins (City Hall News), Stephen Trent (Blightly Calling - Saturdays), Larry Mann (Larry's Coffe Shop - 6:45 to 9:00 a.m.), Our Town (2:30 to 3:00 p.m.), Holiday Newsreel (6-7 p.m.) and For Men Only (Saturdays). Phil Stone was sports director and announcer. He came to the station on February 1. Adele Evans hosted a program of children's stories and was known as Aunt Susan. Bob Hall and Verne Hill were on the announce staff. Aurele Boisvert was chief engineer. Ken Smith and Mel Lovell were operators.
Slogan: More local advertisers use CHUM than ALL other Toronto stations combined! CHUM gets results!
Mike Hopkins left CHUM to become manager of the new CKLB (formerly CKDO) in Oshawa. Al Collins, another former CHUM employee, would be president and general manager of the Oshawa station.
1950
Gord Atkinson brought his Bing Crosby program over to CHUM from CFRB. He also became the station's record librarian. Chuck Cook joined CHUM's announce staff from WEBR in Buffalo. He had worked in Western Canadian radio before moving to the U.S. Don Macleod left CHUM to become commercial manager at CKNW in New Westminster. Vern Hill read news. Leigh Stubbs was program director. John Cleary was an announcer. Phil Stone was sports director. Mel Lovell was an engineer. Harry Rasky was news editor. He left CHUM news for the CKEY news department. Former CHUMer Bill Todd had also joined CKEY. The Johnny Lombardi Show was on CHUM. Josh King was on-air at the station.
Jack Part announced the appointment of Bob Lee as CHUM's manager. Lee had been the station's commercial manager and succeeded Rolly Ford who entered the selling field.
1951
Adele Evans known on-air as Aunt Susan, hosted a daily children's program on CHUM. Former commercial manager Don Macleod was named manager of KATY in San Luis Obispo, California.
Roy Green joined CHUM as an operator. He had been with CHNO Sudbury.
1952
Wendy Paige (Leigh Stubbs) was women's commentator.
1953
Gord Atkinson left CHUM for Ottawa's CFRA. Roy Green was named chief operator of CHUM. Bob Lee was manager.
Late in the year, CHUM made a change to its format. The only dusk-to-dawn station in the country could not afford big names like the larger Toronto stations so decided to have no names at all...just quiet melodic music, with occasional broadcasts not of news but just the headlines.
The BBG approved the transfer of 40,000 common shares in York Broadcasters Ltd.
Stan Edwards became special events director.
1954
Roy Partridge joined CHUM's announcing staff. He had been with CKCK Regina and CJOB Winnipeg.
Jack Part, president of Adrem Ltd. and CHUM Radio, stepped down in favour of Allan F. Waters. Part would spend more time with Adrem Ltd. in the U.S. and abroad. Waters would preside over CHUM which would continue to be managed by Bob Lee. He would also concern himself with the domestic side of Adrem Ltd.

The long farewell: Brad Jones waves CHUM goodbye

Friday May 1 2009 - 7:03AM

One might be tempted to call it the final curtain when, after his shift today, 30-plus year veteran CHUM Radio employee Brad Jones walks out of the Toronto station for the last time. Hired as an operator by Warren Cosford, serving various masters over the years, including J. Robert Wood, Jones has made numerous friends in the industry over the years, and enjoyed many a game of gold within industry alumni and associates. The following is a press release issued yesterday announcing the departure of the last man serving an old and trusted music radio station friend. The format change of 1050CHUM to CP24 Radio 1050 on March 26th affected a number of individuals and positions, including Brad Jones, Program Director 1050CHUM. I asked Brad to stay and help us through the transition; he agreed and did an amazing job with the format restructuring. Brad has played a major role in the success of 1050CHUM over many years and is a truly talented, professional “CHUM Radio” guy. Brad’s last day with us will by Friday May 1st. Please join me in thanking him for all he has done and wishing him the very best with his future endeavors.

The Canada Post -- Maple Life - 1050 CHUM switched to OFF
For the first time in 50 years there's been a strange silence in Toronto's air. For half a century, Elvis, Motown, Buddy Holly, the Beach Boys, Aretha Franklin, Roy Orbison, The Righteous Brothers, The Beatles, Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Stones were all just a dial punch away, cloistered in the golden play lists of Toronto's once unstoppable rock 'n roll-era oldies AM radio station, 1050 CHUM. 1050 CHUM disappeared without ceremony March 26, the victim of changing media times, an all-time low ratings performance and the decreasing demographic clout of the boomer generation who drove the hit-after-hit powerhouse in Canadian broadcasting, and an iconic model of Top 40 radio, from the late 1950s on. Now, Ontario's main force in the daily lives of post-World War II teenagers and a defining element in Canada's cultural life, is no more. Sadly, 1050 CHUM died quietly after a long and steady decline. Even its home at 1331 Yonge St, a local landmark for decades, has been sold to condo developers. Replacing 1050 CHUM is CP24 Radio 1050, an audio stream from the CP24 local live TV news channel that's part of the Citytv property also taken over by CTV. Who might pick up the golden oldies slack in the Toronto listening area? Who knows? The 55-plus demographic might be substantial 27 percent of the population but it's less than 1 percent of advertising dollars target that age group. Which means end of story. End of an era.

CHUM HISTORY

"1050 CHUM" was a legendary Top 40 powerhouse during the late 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s.

Early history and Top 40 format

CHUM AM was launched as a dawn-to-dusk radio station on October 28, 1945 by Jack Q'Part, an entrepreneur in the business of patent medicines. The station, then operating from studios in the Mutual Street Arena, was taken over in December 1954 by Allan Waters, a salesman from Q'Parts' patent medicine business. Waters' first major move was to secure a license for 24-hour-a-day broadcasting for CHUM, along with a power increase to 5,000 watts. Less than three years after Waters acquired the station, and soon after bringing the new fulltime transmitter online, a major programming change was made. On May 27 1957, Waters switched to a "Top 50" format that had proven itself popular in some U.S. cities; Elvis Presley's "All Shook Up" was the first song played. "1050 CHUM" pioneered rock and roll radio in Toronto, and was noteworthy for hosting many noteworthy rock concerts including, among others, visits to Maple Leaf Gardens by Elvis Presley (1957) and The Beatles (1964, '65, and '66). While the station was rising to the top of the popularity ratings in Toronto in the early 1960s, it also built yet another new transmitter in Mississauga, Ontario (a few miles west of the current Toronto city line) along the Lake Ontario shoreline, and raised its power once again to its current 50,000 watts around the clock.

CHUM DJs of the 1960s were zany morning man Al Boliska, who quit in late 1963 to go 'across the street' to CKEY.He was replaced by WKBW, Buffalo radio & TV personality Jay Nelson, popularly known as "Jungle Jay" from his role as host of a children's show on Buffalo's Channel 7 which was also popular among Toronto youngsters. He would be followed by housewives' jock John Spragge; singer/DJ Mike Darow; Pete Nordheimer, replaced in 1961 by witty Bob McAdorey; teen DJ Dave Johnson; and all night maven Bob Laine. Later additions to the CHUM DJ lineup included Duff Roman and Brian Skinner, both of whom came over from CKEY (then owned by Jack Kent Cooke). In the late 1960s, early 1970s, CHUM DJ's included Duke Roberts (also known as Gary Duke for a time), Johnny Mitchell (better known today as Sonny Fox), J. Michael Wilson, Tom Rivers, Scott Carpenter, Jim Van Horne, John Rode, Don Reagan, Terry Steele and Roger Ashby. Among their later mighttime hosts was John D. Roberts, who joined CHUM in 1977 and would eventually become known across North America as White House correspondent for CBS-TV and host of CNN's morning program "American Morning."

CHUM was also well known for its contests, like the 1970s' "I Listen to CHUM" promotion, in which DJs would dial phone numbers at random and award $1,000 to anyone who answered the phone with that phrase.

From gold-based to oldies

By the mid-1980s, CHUM had lost ground in the Toronto ratings to competitor Top 40 station CFTR and FM-based music stations. On June 6, 1986, CHUM dropped its Top 40 format for a heavily gold-based adult contemporary format ("Favourites of Yesterday and Today"). By 1989, CHUM adopted an oldies format, drawing heavily on its previous Top 40 reputation to cater to the fans of that era's music.
